Insurance and cash, without a quote
The short answer
Original Medicare doesn't cover most dental care; you pay all costs for services it doesn't cover [S1]. Florida Medicaid's dental benefits for adults 21 and older are limited [S2, S3]. Cosmetic work such as veneers may not be covered by insurance unless deemed medically necessary [S4]. Nationally, most dental spending is paid out of pocket [S5]. This page outlines the categories. Only your plan and a licensed dentist can tell you what applies to you.
What this is and is not
Medicare and Medicaid are not the same. Medicare is the federal program; for dental care, it generally doesn't cover routine cleanings, fillings, extractions, dentures or implants [S1]. National (federal program). Florida Medicaid is a separate state program run through managed care plans [S2]. Florida.
What actually changes the decision
- Original Medicare. It doesn't cover routine dental care [S1]. Some dental services received as a hospital inpatient can be covered [S1]. National (federal program).
- Florida Medicaid. Most Florida Medicaid recipients are in the Statewide Medicaid Managed Care program, and everyone on Medicaid must enroll in a dental plan [S2]. For people 21 and older, Medicaid reimburses acute emergency procedures for pain or infection, plus dentures and denture-related procedures [S3]. A broader list applies under 21 [S3]. Florida.
- Cosmetic or medically necessary. Veneers are considered cosmetic, so they may not be covered unless deemed medically necessary [S4]. National.
- Who actually pays. Most U.S. dental spending in 2024 was out of pocket [S5]. In 2022, 18% of adults on Medicaid saw a dentist, compared with 57% of adults with private insurance [S5]. National.
- Free-care claims. NIDCR doesn't provide dental care or financial help, and ads claiming otherwise are likely fraudulent [S6]. In Florida, dentist ads for free or discounted services must follow a specific statute (section 456.062) [S7]. We describe the rule only. Florida.
- Where to look. The Florida Department of Health points to information on the Florida Medicaid Dental Program [S8]. The ADA's consumer site has a page on finding reduced-cost care [S9].
What it tends to cost in Miami / South Florida
There is no clean public range. We found no dated Miami or Florida price from a source we can cite [S5]. This guide gives no quote. What moves the price is on What changes the price.
Questions to ask a licensed dentist
- Is any of this medically necessary, or is it cosmetic as far as my plan is concerned?
- Which ADA procedure codes will you bill, so I can check them with my plan?
- What's the cash price, and what would my plan pay?
- If I'm on Florida Medicaid, is this on my plan's list?
Take these to a licensed dentist and to your plan. Only a dentist who examines you can say what you need, and only your plan can say what it pays.
